10 EASY MOVING TIPS:
  • 1. Failing to plan is planning to fail!
  • The sooner you know that you will be moving the better. If you know a month or more ahead of time and start your organizing your thoughts then, you will have a much easier move than if you decided to wait until the last week to rush into everything. If you are buying a new home, try to plan your travel time and work around your closing date of your new home.
  • 2. Change of Address Notification
  • This is one that many people forget to do until well after they have moved into their new home. It's always a hassle trying to get your old mail when at your new location. Contact your local Post Office, credit card companies, and any other office (especially Government) that deals with change of address for major forms of identification first. Also notify your phone, cable, internet and power companies of your new address.
  • 3. Registration(s)
  • Be sure to register your children in their new schools, sports teams, etc. A healthy mind and body is never a bad thing. If you or your family have a gym membership, see if it is usuable in your new location.
  • 4. Scout the Area
  • If you've never lived in this area before, it might be a good time to go for a walk or drive to get to know your neighborhood. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the public transportation system in your new area if it's required by you or your family for commuting.
  • 5. Combustables and Flammables
  • Don't ship any combustables or flammables with your items. It's safer to get rid of your spray cans and household cleaners than to ship them with all your items. Be sure to check your lawnmowers to empty gasoline from its tank also!
  • 6. Keys
  • When packing, try to pack the bulkier and heavier items at the bottom of the boxes. This will reduce chances of potential damage to your belongings. Nobody enjoys a move when things break on them!
  • 7. Moving Day!
  • Ensure you leave the old keys with the proper individuals (landlord, new home owners, etc). While doing this make sure you have your own new keys. This is a great time to organize your keychain!
  • 8. Electronics
  • After all of your items are unpacked and you are in your new home, try not to use any electronic devices (tv, stereo, computers, etc) for the first 30 minutes at least. Electronics have less chances of being damaged if they are given time to adjust to room temperature.
  • 9. Your new home!
  • Check to ensure nothing needs to be fixed in your new place when you arrive. Contact any repairmen required to get it done and out of the way.
  • 10. Keep in touch!
  • Make sure you have at least one person's number from your old city/town if you are moving a long distance. Good friends are hard to find, so keep in touch with them.
Hillier's Moving & Transport also offers packing services (discounts apply to students and seniors).
